Blood Glucose Test
A blood test that measures the amount of glucose in the blood at a specific point in time.
What the test involves
A blood glucose test measures the concentration of glucose in the blood. Depending on the clinical question, it may be measured while fasting, at a random time or during an oral glucose tolerance test.
Why it may be requested
It may be requested to:
- Assess symptoms suggestive of diabetes
- Diagnose or monitor diabetes
- Investigate low or high blood glucose
- Monitor glucose during illness or treatment
- Assess metabolic health when clinically indicated
How to prepare
Preparation depends on the type of glucose test.
Fasting blood glucose requires a period without food according to the instructions given by the healthcare provider or laboratory. Random blood glucose does not generally require fasting.
Always follow the specific instructions provided for the test.
Understanding results
Results are interpreted according to whether the sample was fasting, random or taken during an oral glucose tolerance test.
A high result may indicate impaired glucose regulation or diabetes, while a low result may indicate hypoglycaemia.
A single abnormal result may require repeat testing or additional assessment depending on the clinical situation.
A test result on its own cannot establish a diagnosis.
